Munly & Slim

I saw local acts Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots along with Slim Cessna and the Auto Club last night at the Larimer Lounge. Both bands get put in the unfortunately named "alt-country" genre. I guess the reason I dislike that label so much is that the music it desribes seems so much more like a rebellion against modern gloss-pop country yet it is forced to be defined in terms of that crap -- the alternative to that crap I guess.
Anyway, these guys (and gals) have created this wonderful often dark and gritty music with a handful of local references (which I always think adds so much). The experience of it all was likened to a Pentacostal church service by my friend Jenn and I think she's totally nailed it -- like some enchanting dark gospel is being preached which you have no power to resist.
Most significantly, the chemistry and charisma of the performers just can't be communicated in text. They have to be seen. Quite possibly the best show I've been to here in Denver -- so unique.
Here's a tune that Slim Cessna played last night, though it is done by Munly here (I forgot to mention he's in both bands).
