Holiday Weekend

It was a beautiful Labor Day weekend in New York, so I decided to get sick and spend the entirety of it indoors in a cold medicine induced fog. The sad thing is that it's not even over yet. I think that I finally turned the corner yesterday, but it was a very slight turn. I guess this thing isn't one of those 24-48 hour deals.

The only nice thing about being sick is that it's an excuse to go crazy watching movies (I saw I Heart Huckabees, Annie Hall, & The Pianist -- all very good, especially Annie Hall). Then I remembered how much I dislike Blockbuster. Besides never having the movie you want to see in stock, the movies they do have have a 50% chance of being defective! My roommate and I have probably gotten 10 movies from them in the last 2 months and we've had problems with every other one I swear. In the middle of the Pianist I had to walk back up to the store to get another copy just to get through the movie. The thing absolutely didn't work past the 1 hour mark. The retarded thing is that the replacement version didn't work either, so 15 minutes or so of that movie are just lost to me. It'd be one thing of Blockbuster was cheap or something, but I'm paying 5 bucks a pop for broken movies and crappy service, so that's all done now. I signed up for Netflix finally last night. I know I'm 3 years late to that revolution, but it takes me time to take on a new monthly bill. This one, however, makes pretty good sense. Splitting it with my roommate, it's only $7.50 a month. That's less than what it costs to rent two partially working, probably not even there videos at Blockbuster.

Of course I spent a lot of the time reading and thinking about the aftermath of Katrina as well. I keep trying to write something about it, but I was never satisfied enough with my thoughts to publish it. My friend Jeff and his family are from New Orleans, and things looked pretty grim for him for a couple of days. It seems like he may come out of it relatively unscathed for now, but this thing won't really be over for a long, long time. In many ways it's still just the beginning. So best wishes to Jeff and his family -- and everyone else affected there.
